(Program)

Profiles of the Japanese Artists introduced in [sync~04] Sonar special.
Kanta Horio
Kanta Horio was born in Hiroshima in 1978.
He used to perform with a laptop computer, but now he combines computer programing, self made electric devices, kinetic objects, and musical interfaces. His machines are based on phisical phenomenon and some actual sounds. Recently he works with electromagnets, motors, contact microphones and a video camera for generating audio/visuals.
Alongside his performance activities, he organizes events “dorkbot tokyo - people doing strange things with electricity” with Kazuhiro JO, exonemo.
Taeji Sawai
Born in 1978. The ’sound’ of our multi-functional daily existence is supported by various information systems. By dividing the generally recognized sound of the ‘perceptible sound wave by hearing’ and ‘perceptible vibration through sense of touch’, he is exploring the possibilities of Auditory Design. Through amplifying, developing, constructing and mixing the unconsciously experienced daily environment. He works to expand our perception and organs of perception in his Solo project.
and He belongs to an unit, portable[k]ommunity which works on projects under sensitive yet violent aesthetics with the use of bugs or effects like bugs produced by a large amount of Data with high quality.
Moreover, as a member of an unit called aeo whose other members are EYE(Boredoms/V∞redoms) and Kazuhiro Jo(SWQ), he seeks a way to break the contradictory relation of restrictions and freedom in computing by changing primitive body movements to acoustic sounds which is triggered by Sensors and the EYE’s perception and more body movements.
DORAVIDEO
DoraVideo is the brain child of Yoshimitsu Ichiraku (drums and computer), who appeared in the 2005 summer grand bazaar commercial for the department store Laforet Harajuku, won an honorary mention in the Digital Music division of Europe’s largest media art festival, ARS Electronica, and has been active as the drummer in the band Yamaguchi, which has stirred up quite a storm of prizes and awards world wide.
He has created a very exciting and fun group which involves a drum and computer controlled system. He placed impact sensors all over the drum set, creating a huge video deck, and allowing him to using the drum set to control the video image.
As a drummer, he not only creates first class works, but also has a highly developed sense of nonsensical fun and entertainment. Ichiraku and Ito have already toured France and Korea to great acclaim, and this year plan to tour Europe, England, and America.
A home video taken by business men on a factory visit, a video taken at a hotel banquet in which a fellow clings to and pushes over a fat middle aged companion girl, Joshi 12 gakubou(The 12 Girls Band from china), Matsuken Samba, Imperial court, and ‘Bush and Bush’, a moral video created for public use in America involving mass calisthenics of North Korea and George W.Bush, which is a collage of scenes of calisthenics and parades that surpasses Michael Moore’s work. He generously shows an amazing collection of materials on video.
The DVD released in July of this year, ‘DoraVideo Volume 1′, managed to violate every imaginable law, committing copyright infringement, slander, indecent exposure, has been awarded a spot in the Guiness Book of World Records for offensiveness, and went out of print just before release.
This energy is not limited to video, a sound track has also finally been released! This sound track is Ichirakuユs second solo album, and if we could sum up this project in one phrase, it would be DoraVideo without the video. In additon the soundtrack of the August 6th 2002 live performance in Korea has been published.
When the DVD was released, one could say it was a study of copyright infringement, slander, and indecent exposure, being successful at very nearly violating all of these rules, and is a product which offers a very strange sense of satisfaction.
The jacket for this album was designed by Showgo Yoshikawa, who is invoved in animation and VJing, is the publisher of the stateless international anarchical illustration magazine ‘PALiNiLLiLLmAstEr’,the owner of the sticker label ‘hePALiN’ and who is also the basist for ZUINOSIN.
Optrum (Atsuhiro Ito)
Atsuhiro Ito was born in 1965. He launched his career as a visual artist in the late ’80s, and in ‘98 began presenting sound performances at art exhibitions and so on. Ito made use of fluorescent lighting (which is also an element of his art installations) in the creation of an original musical device called the optron. He continues to refine the instrument while approaching sound and music from a contemporary-art-based perspective. In addition to his solo exhibition and performance projects, Ito is active in a number of musical units. One of these is Optrum, the explosively loud “extreme optical noise core band” consisting of Ito and drummer Yoichiro Shin. Between 2000 and 2005 Ito presented various sound (music)/visual image-related events at Off Site, the now-defunct gallery/free space in Yoyogi, Tokyo. The Optrum album Recorded was released in June 2006 on the label Unknownmix (Headz).
